Good to know
- Some clothes are always plural because they come in two parts: pants, socks, gloves, boots, sunglasses. Say "my socks", "a pair of gloves".
- Pants is American English; in British English they are called trousers.
- Scarf, shirt and shoe start with different sounds: "sk", "sh" and "sh". Shirt and shoe need the "sh" sound, not "s".
Play at home
- While dressing say each item: "Socks on! Shirt on! Hat on!"
- Pack a pretend bag for cold weather: coat, scarf, gloves, boots.
- Play "What am I wearing?" and take turns.
Practise with Word Island
Word Island practises clothes words, together with face and body words, on Me and My Clothes, which opens with full access. Each pack is a set of short games where the child hears, picks and builds the word, says it out loud, and then meets all the pictures again.

Questions
Why is "pants" plural for one item?
It has two legs, so English treats it as a pair, like scissors or glasses.
Is an umbrella clothing?
Not really, but it sits with the cold-weather words in the game because you take it out with your coat and boots.
